A moment that changed me: I thought fitness was my superpower. Then I realised it was a ball and chain

Running had been my identity, my career, my life. One beautiful spring day, I realised it wasnât enough
I have Jane Fonda to thank for my fitness âdiscoveryâ in the late 1980s. Still in my teens, I wore through the carpet doing her workout videos in front of the TV. I also spent hours ploughing up and down the pool at the local leisure centre and honing my muscles at the gym.
I always regarded fitness as my superpower. Something that I worked hard at, for sure, but something that gave me kudos. Keeping fit â I mean, really fit â seemed to me an admirable and noble pursuit. I could fit into nice clothes easily. I could push my body and trust it not to fail. Whatever other qualities I didnât possess, whatever I wasnât good enough at, I could walk into a gym or toe a start line for a race and pass muster.

US says hold on weapons delivery wonât be a one-off if Israel presses ahead with Rafah offensive â live
Wed, 08 May 2024 17:57:27 GMT
US officials suggest already approved arms deliveries could be delayed and new shipments could face obstacles
Following the Biden administrationâs decision to pause a weapons shipment to Israel over its plans for a Rafah invasion, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont said:
Given the unprecedented humanitarian disaster that Netanyahuâs war has created in Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of children face starvation, President Biden is absolutely right to halt bomb delivery to this extreme, rightwing Israeli government. But this must be a first step.
The US must now use ALL its leverage to demand an immediate ceasefire, the end of the attacks on Rafah, and the immediate delivery of massive amounts of humanitarian aid to people living in desperation. Our leverage is clear. Over the years, the United States has provided tens of billions of dollars in military aid to Israel. We can no longer be complicit in Netanyahuâs horrific war against the Palestinian people.

The Guardian view on MPs crossing the floor: a triumph of political theatre over substance | Editorial
Wed, 08 May 2024 17:31:17 GMT
Natalie Elphicke is not a comfortable fit for Labour, but her defection is eloquent in expressing the decline of Rishi Sunakâs Tories
Surveying recent election losses, some Conservatives have concluded that the problem is a deficit of radical Conservatism â a prospectus defined by commitment to always cutting taxes, public spending and immigration. Natalie Elphicke would once have been considered a likely proponent of that approach, but on Wednesday the MP for Dover expressed her frustration with Rishi Sunakâs leadership by moving in a very different direction â to cross the Commons floor and join Labour.
Ms Elphickeâs politics, rooted on the hard right of her former party, gave no indication of propensity for conversion to Keir Starmerâs creed. Setting policy differences aside, some Labour MPs are queasy about the concerted effort their new colleague put into supporting Charlie Elphicke, her predecessor in the Dover seat and now ex-husband, when he faced allegations of sexual assault â offences for which he was jailed.

The former president could only sit and watch as the adult film actor Stormy Daniels told her version of events from an alleged sexual encounter they had in 2006. Prosecutors say that Trumpâs former lawyer Michael Cohen shuttled a $130,000 hush-money payment to Daniels less than two weeks before the 2016 presidential election, to keep her from talking to anyone about her alleged encounter with Trump.
So how bad was Danielsâ testimony for the presumptive GOP candidate? Jonathan Freedland and the political commentator Molly Jong-Fast discuss an extraordinary day in a Manhattan courtroom

Activists doubt Labourâs cautious strategy, but many voters are looking for a âWeetabix candidateâ â reassuring and uncontroversial
Amid the cacophony of post-election analysis over the weekend, one item struck me as especially bleak for Rishi Sunak. It wasnât the byelection defeat or the seismic swing away from the Tories. It wasnât even in a news programme. It was an advert.
âBritain hasnât been so great of late,â says a pastiche scientist. âEconomical, societal and sporting performance has dropped.â The reason: not enough Weetabix.

Non-doms are threatening to leave. Should they be convinced to stay? - podcast
Tue, 07 May 2024 02:00:01 GMT
Multi-millionaire Bassim Haidar says ending the non-dom tax status is a mistake. He plans to leave the UK and says other non-doms will do the same. Should the government change their mind?
The chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, announced in his spring budget that the government was going to scrap the ânon-domicileâ regime, which has allowed the multi-millionaire Bassim Haidar and 68,800 other non-doms to avoid paying UK tax on their overseas income for the past 225 years. It will raise ÂŁ2.7bn a year.
The Guardianâs wealth correspondent, Rupert Neate tells Hannah Moore about interviewing Haidar over his decision to leave the UK because of the end of the non-dom regime. From next year, people can avoid taxes only in the first four years of residency in the UK, compared with the previous 15-year threshold.

Appeals court said it would allow Trump to challenge decision not to disqualify Willis over relationship with her deputy
The Georgia state court of appeals on Wednesday said it would consider an appeal from Donald Trump of an order allowing Fani Willis, the district attorney, to continue prosecuting his election interference case in Fulton county.
In a one-page order, the appeals court said it would allow Trump to challenge the decision not to disqualify Willis over her relationship with Nathan Wade, a special prosecutor she hired to lead the Trump case. Scott McAfee, the trial judge overseeing the case, ruled in March that Willis could stay on the case as long as Wade resigned. Wade subsequently resigned the same day McAfee issued his decision.

As 400 million EU citizens prepare to cast their votes in Juneâs European elections, a new poll shows that it is Ursula von der Leyen who has caught votersâ attention like no EU chief before her.
Our survey suggests that a large majority of Europeans today are aware that she is the European Commission president, considered to be the most powerful political office in the EU. Previous EU chief executives have been largely unknown to the public. But almost 75% are able to correctly identify von der Leyenâs name and recognise her face. Five years ago, her predecessor, Jean-Claude Juncker, scored only 40% recognition.

After 200 years, women can join the Garrick. Now for the task of making it share power, not hoard it | Jemima Olchawski
Wed, 08 May 2024 12:39:39 GMT
Last nightâs membership vote is a step in the right direction, but this remains a closed, elite institution
Britainâs âold boysâ clubâ suffered a blow last night. The Garrick Club â an exclusive gentlemenâs club in central London and relic of some 19th-century fantasy of male dominance â voted to allow women to become members for the first time in almost 200 years. About 60% of the votes were in favour.
In the 21st century, there is simply no legitimate justification for the exclusion of women. There actually never was. That the Garrick Clubâs exclusionary policy has been so robustly defended in recent weeks speaks to a profound misogyny alive and well in Britain. What would including women do to the refined, rarefied air of the club? Contaminate it with our chit-chat? Our nagging? Would our feminine charms prove too much of a distraction?
The refrain of ânothing to see hereâ is all too familiar to so many women. Itâs not a work meeting, itâs just a couple of holes at the golf course. Itâs just blowing off steam. Itâs just a couple of drinks with the guys. We didnât think you would want to come. But itâs not plausible to say that work doesnât happen in spaces like the Garrick, and that these arenât places where, even loosely, critical decisions are made. Clubs like the Garrick are built for soft networking, the sidebar conversations where real power coalesces, uninterrupted by pesky women. A sense that you belong among its exclusive cohort is in and of itself a means of sustaining male power.
The proof is in the revelation of the names of about 60 of the Garrickâs most influential members. Senior civil servants, politicians, the head of MI6 (who subsequently resigned from the club), even King Charles. These men quite literally reign over the most powerful institutions of our country, places where women are consistently underrepresented and underserved. Rhetorically, they are committed to driving equality. Some of them tweet on International Womenâs Day. But these commitments ring very hollow when you realise that men in power choose to spend their spare time in a club that was founded in 1831, and has scarcely changed since.
We also have to consider what we lose when we keep women at the door. Do the 40% of Garrick members who voted against allowing women in believe that only men make worthy contributions to arts, politics, culture? These men would do well to consider what we miss out on when we fail to recognise women as equal contributors and thinkers, with the right and ability to converse, share ideas and shape culture. What might the world look like if women were treated as true equals in these conversations?
The question will be asked about women-only spaces. If men-only clubs must permit women, what of womenâs clubs? But there is a key difference. Men gathering in influential places to the exclusion of women is profoundly status quo. Theyâve been doing it for hundreds of years. When senior politicians and policymakers take lunch together at the Garrick, they are reinforcing power structures that have existed for centuries. There are plenty of women-only spaces that will continue to exclude men, but they do so to resist power, not to hoard it. (For the record, the Fawcett Society welcomes and encourages our male allies to join us).
Last nightâs vote may be a step in the right direction, but of course there are still plenty of reasons for discomfort. The Garrick remains an elite club where only a chosen few are invited, and even fewer can afford membership. Thatâs a conversation that we must have. But itâs important that a majority of members have accepted that to continue to exclude women is harmful and self-defeating. Now the real work begins of actively including a diversity of women. And Garrick members, new and old, need to ask themselves what they are doing to share and distribute power fairly â not guard it among their own.
Jemima Olchawski is the chief executive of the Fawcett Society

Joe Bidenâs âred lineâ is an invasion of Rafah. So what happens if Israel attacks?
Tue, 07 May 2024 18:44:58 GMT
Itâs a moment of truth for Bidenâs policy on Israel and the Palestinians â and at the least will make continued prevarication harder to disguise
When Israeli troops paraded through the Rafah crossing with an oversized star of David on Tuesday morning, they were making a point to Hamas â and at the same time driving up to the very edge of Joe Bidenâs âred lineâ.
The Biden administration avoids that phrase at all costs. Its top officials also served Barack Obama, who drew a red line he did not enforce over Syriaâs chemical weapons. Rory McIlroy not returning to PGA Tour board after âold woundsâ reopened
Wed, 08 May 2024 16:22:43 GMT
- Decision set to cause consternation with sponsors and partners
- âIt got pretty complicated and pretty messy,â declared golfer
The internal politics of the PGA Tour have been placed into sharp focus after Rory McIlroy was astonishingly prevented from returning to a position of power within the organisation. The inability of McIlroy to take places on the PGA Tour policy board and as a director of PGA Tour Enterprises is certain to cause consternation among sponsors and partners, including the European Tour Group.
Webb Simpson planned to resign from both boards, with the former US Open champion offering specific instruction that he wanted McIlroy to take on the positions. The 35-year-old, who has been frustrated at the time being taken to unify golf, was happy to step forward.

Australians are forecast to have more disposable income next year, according to budget predictions, with higher wages, tax cuts and lowering inflation.
But those on unemployment payments are unlikely to see any major change to their financial situations, with the government dampening expectations the base jobseeker rate will increase, despite growing pressure from economists, social justice groups and equality advocates.

The Searchers by Andy Beckett review â the legacy of the radical left
Wed, 08 May 2024 10:00:40 GMT
What do the careers of Diane Abbott, Tony Benn, Jeremy Corbyn, Ken Livingstone and John McDonnell tell us about political success?
âPersistence,â writes Andy Beckett, âis one of the leftâs qualities that its enemies like least.â These hair-shirted zealots spend countless hours meeting, rallying, consciousness-raising, drumming up meagre support for seemingly lost causes. While he was the Greater London Council leader, Ken Livingstone lived alone in a student bedsit, the centrepiece of his room a quarter-sized snooker table on which he would practise shots after a 14-hour working day. Such obsessiveness seems baffling to the unbeliever. Why, they wonder, doesnât the left just give up?
This book offers an answer. âLeftwing politics,â Beckett claims, âis rarely the dead end its enemies would love it to be.â He begins in 1968, with Tony Bennâs conversion from an on-message cabinet minister into a standard-bearer for radicalism. Bennâs reawakening coincided roughly with the coming to political age of four much younger figures â Livingstone, Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell and Diane Abbott â who went on to forge a new left with him. Beckett has talked to all five, and is broadly a sympathiser, but his account of their project, while vividly detailed and often gripping, is as likely to reveal the leftâs vanities and shortcomings.

A bill to ban the manufacture, sale and advertising of vapes in Australia should be passed, a Senate committee has recommended, after evidence from public hearings and almost 300 submissions.
If passed by the Senate, the legislation will mean the only way vapes can legally be obtained is through a prescription from a GP or nurse practitioner. A vote is expected in June.

Wednesday briefing: What Israelâs Rafah offensive means for the prospect of peace
Wed, 08 May 2024 05:45:34 GMT
In todayâs newsletter: As an assault on a key route for aid is underway, we look at how the humanitarian crisis will unfold and the prospects for a ceasefire
⢠Sign up here for our daily newsletter, First Edition
Good morning. Israel has threatened to expand its military operation in Rafah after it seized control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing â which was the key remaining land route to get desperately needed aid into Gaza, where millions of people are suffering an escalating humanitarian crisis.
The Israeli military said it had taken âoperational controlâ of the border with Egypt in a âprecise and limited operationâ, but gave notice that it will soon be followed by an âextreme forceâ ground offensive that the UN warns could lead to the âslaughter of civiliansâ. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) has begun dropping flyers on relief camps in Rafah, ordering Palestinians â many of whom have already fled the conflict, sometimes several times â to immediately evacuate.
Israel-Gaza war | Joe Bidenâs administration paused a shipment of weapons to Israel last week in opposition to apparent moves by the Israelis to invade the southern Gaza city of Rafah, a senior administration official has said. Israel has launched a major military offensive against Hamas forces in Gazaâs southernmost city, seizing control of a key border crossing and cutting off most aid a day before indirect talks on a ceasefire deal are due to restart.
US | Donald Trumpâs criminal trial entered a new stage on Tuesday with testimony from Stormy Daniels, an adult film star at the center of his hush-money scandal. Daniels told jurors that she had a sexual liaison with Trump in 2006 that left her nervous and ashamed.
Scotland | The new Scottish National party leader John Swinney will become Scotlandâs seventh first minister after winning the backing of MSPs. Swinney won the vote eight days after Humza Yousaf announced his departure.
Health | The Cass review âabsolutelyâ did not set an unfairly high bar for evidence, its author has said, as she addressed âsignificant misinformationâ about her assessment of healthcare provision for gender-questioning young people in England and Wales.
Garrick Club | The men-only Garrick Club in London has finally voted to allow women to become members, 193 years after it first opened its doors. 562 members (59.98%) voted in favour and 375 (40.02%) against, in a private meeting where several hundred members spent two hours debating whether to permit women to join.

As we explore LimeWire, our aim is to uncover its features, benefits for creators, and the exciting possibilities it offers for AI content generation. This platform presents an opportunity for users to harness the power of AI in image creation, all while enjoying the advantages of a free and accessible service.
Let's unravel the distinctive features that set LimeWire apart in the dynamic landscape of AI-powered tools, understanding how creators can leverage its capabilities to craft unique and engaging AI-generated images.
Introduction
LimeWire, a name once associated with the notorious file-sharing tool from the 2000s, has undergone a significant transformation. The LimeWire we discuss today is not the file-sharing application of the past but has re-emerged as an entirely new entityâa cutting-edge AI content publishing platform.
This revamped LimeWire invites users to register and unleash their creativity by crafting original AI content, which can then be shared and showcased on the LimeWire Studio. Notably, even acclaimed artists and musicians, such as Deadmau5, Soulja Boy, and Sean Kingston, have embraced this platform to publish their content in the form of NFT music, videos, and images.
Beyond providing a space for content creation and sharing, LimeWire introduces monetization models to empower users to earn revenue from their creations. This includes avenues such as earning ad revenue and participating in the burgeoning market of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). As we delve further, we'll explore these monetization strategies in more detail to provide a comprehensive understanding of LimeWire's innovative approach to content creation and distribution.
LimeWire Studio welcomes content creators into its fold, providing a space to craft personalized AI-focused content for sharing with fans and followers. Within this creative hub, every piece of content generated becomes not just a creation but a unique assetâownable and tradable. Fans have the opportunity to subscribe to creators' pages, immersing themselves in the creative journey and gaining ownership of digital collectibles that hold tradeable value within the LimeWire community. Notably, creators earn a 2.5% royalty each time their content is traded, adding a rewarding element to the creative process.
The platform's flexibility is evident in its content publication options. Creators can choose to share their work freely with the public or opt for a premium subscription model, granting exclusive access to specialized content for subscribers.
As of the present moment, LimeWire focuses on AI Image Generation, offering a spectrum of creative possibilities to its user base. The platform, however, has ambitious plans on the horizon, aiming to broaden its offerings by introducing AI music and video generation tools in the near future. This strategic expansion promises creators even more avenues for expression and engagement with their audience, positioning LimeWire Studio as a dynamic and evolving platform within the realm of AI-powered content creation.

The LimeWire AI image generation tool presents a versatile platform for both the creation and editing of images. Supporting advanced models such as Stable Diffusion 2.1, Stable Diffusion XL, and DALL-E 2, LimeWire offers a sophisticated toolkit for users to delve into the realm of generative AI art.
Much like other tools in the generative AI landscape, LimeWire provides a range of options catering to various levels of complexity in image creation. Users can initiate the creative process with prompts as simple as a few words or opt for more intricate instructions, tailoring the output to their artistic vision.
What sets LimeWire apart is its seamless integration of different AI models and design styles. Users have the flexibility to effortlessly switch between various AI models, exploring diverse design styles such as cinematic, digital art, pixel art, anime, analog film, and more. Each style imparts a distinctive visual identity to the generated AI art, enabling users to explore a broad spectrum of creative possibilities.

Automatically Mint Your Content As NFTs
Upon completing your creative endeavor on LimeWire, the platform allows you the option to publish your content. An intriguing feature follows this step: LimeWire automates the process of minting your creation as a Non-Fungible Token (NFT), utilizing either the Polygon or Algorand blockchain. This transformative step imbues your artwork with a unique digital signature, securing its authenticity and ownership in the decentralized realm.
Creators on LimeWire hold the power to decide the accessibility of their NFT creations. By opting for a public release, the content becomes discoverable by anyone, fostering a space for engagement and interaction. Furthermore, this choice opens the avenue for enthusiasts to trade the NFTs, adding a layer of community involvement to the artistic journey.
Alternatively, LimeWire acknowledges the importance of exclusivity. Creators can choose to share their posts exclusively with their premium subscribers. In doing so, the content remains a special offering solely for dedicated fans, creating an intimate and personalized experience within the LimeWire community. This flexibility in sharing options emphasizes LimeWire's commitment to empowering creators with choices in how they connect with their audience and distribute their digital creations.
After creating your content, you can choose to publish the content. It will automatically mint your creation as an NFT on the Polygon or Algorand blockchain. You can also choose whether to make it public or subscriber-only.
If you make it public, anyone can discover your content and even trade the NFTs. If you choose to share the post only with your premium subscribers, it will be exclusive only to your fans.
Earn Revenue From Your Content
Additionally, you can earn ad revenue from your content creations as well.
When you publish content on LimeWire, you will receive 70% of all ad revenue from other users who view your images, music, and videos on the platform.
This revenue model will be much more beneficial to designers. You can experiment with the AI image and content generation tools and share your creations while earning a small income on the side.
LMWR Tokens
The revenue you earn from your creations will come in the form of LMWR tokens, LimeWireâs own cryptocurrency.
Your earnings will be paid every month in LMWR, which you can then trade on many popular crypto exchange platforms like Kraken, ByBit, and UniSwap.
You can also use your LMWR tokens to pay for prompts when using LimeWire generative AI tools.
